God’s justice always protects the most vulnerable.In 19th-century Nigeria, fear-driven traditions cost innocent lives.Through one obedient servant, God confronted cruelty with compassion and restored dignity to children once discarded.
⏳ Background :
In the late 1800s, among the Efik people of Calabar, the birth of twins was feared. Cultural beliefs labeled one twin as evil, leading families to abandon or kill both infants to avoid misfortune.
Mothers lived in fear, powerless to protect their children. Women had little voice, and superstition ruled over compassion. The weak suffered while tradition justified cruelty. Human strength and courage were insufficient to challenge these deeply rooted beliefs.
🔥 Turning Point :
God intervened through obedient courage grounded in faith.
Mary Slessor, guided by Scripture and prayer, refused to accept the destruction of innocent life. Trusting God’s authority above cultural fear, she acted decisively—rescuing abandoned twins, sheltering them in her own home, and confronting village chiefs with truth and conviction.
God gave her favor, protection, and influence. Over time, hearts softened, fear weakened, and God’s justice began to reshape community values.
🌿 Transformation :
As Mary Slessor faithfully obeyed, change followed. Twin abandonment declined sharply in Ekpene Obom and nearby regions. Communities began to honor life rather than fear superstition.
More importantly, faith matured—mothers gained courage, women found voice, and children were welcomed rather than discarded. God used steady obedience, not force, to bring lasting transformation.
