Arthur Stace never became a famous preacher, politician, or church leader. Yet through a simple act of obedience, God used him to place a message of eternity before millions of people.

⏳ A Life Trapped in Darkness
Before becoming known throughout Sydney, Arthur Stace lived a very different life.
Born in Sydney, Australia, in 1885, Arthur grew up in extreme poverty. His parents struggled with alcoholism, and his childhood was marked by hardship, neglect, and instability. Formal education was almost absent from his life. He learned very little reading and writing and spent much of his youth surviving rather than thriving.
As he entered adulthood, Arthur followed the same destructive path that surrounded him. Alcohol became a controlling force in his life. He drifted into crime, spent time in prison, and moved from one temporary job to another.
The streets of Sydney became his home.
Many people viewed him as another lost man with little hope for the future.
Internally, Arthur experienced the emptiness that so often accompanies a life without purpose. His circumstances seemed fixed. His habits felt impossible to break. Society offered few reasons to believe his life would amount to anything significant.
Like many people today, he carried deep struggles that money, work, or human effort could not solve.
By all appearances, Arthur Stace was an unlikely candidate to be used by God.
Yet God specializes in transforming lives that others have given up on.
🔥 When God Gave Him One Word
In August 1930, Arthur attended a Christian service at St. Barnabas Church in Sydney.
There he heard the gospel message clearly presented. Convicted of his sin and aware of his need for a Savior, Arthur surrendered his life to Jesus Christ.
His conversion was genuine.
The alcohol that had controlled him for years lost its grip. His desires began to change. He developed a hunger for Scripture, prayer, and Christian fellowship.
A few years later, Arthur attended another church gathering where evangelist Reverend John Ridley preached a message about eternity.
During the sermon, Ridley passionately declared that he wished he could shout the word “Eternity” throughout the streets of Sydney.
The message deeply affected Arthur.
As he left the meeting, he sensed God impressing that single word upon his heart.
“Eternity.”
Arthur later testified that he felt called to write the word wherever people would see it.
The calling seemed unusual.
He was not a preacher.
He was not a teacher.
He was not a public speaker.
Yet God was asking him to use what he had.
The next morning, carrying a piece of chalk, Arthur walked through Sydney and carefully wrote one word on a sidewalk:
ETERNITY
That simple act marked the beginning of a ministry that would continue for more than thirty years.
Day after day, before work, Arthur rose early and traveled throughout the city.
Train stations.
Busy sidewalks.
Public squares.
Commercial districts.
Everywhere he went, he wrote the same word.
He never sought recognition.
He never signed his name.
He never tried to build a personal following.
His goal was simple: remind people to think about eternity and their relationship with God.

For more than three decades, Arthur faithfully carried out the assignment God had given him.

Most never knew who was responsible.
Arthur remained content to serve quietly.

The individual whom society overlooked became a tool in God’s hands.
Years after Arthur’s death in 1967, his influence continued.
The famous “Eternity” script became one of Australia’s most recognized Christian symbols. During the Sydney Harbour Bridge millennium celebration in 2000, the word was displayed before a global audience of millions.
Arthur never lived to see the full impact of his obedience.
Yet God did.
His story demonstrates that faithful service often produces fruit far beyond our lifetime.

Arthur Stace’s story teaches us several important truths about God and the Christian life.
First, God delights in using ordinary people. Scripture repeatedly shows that God looks beyond human qualifications and sees the heart. Moses struggled with speech, David was overlooked by his family, and the disciples were ordinary workers. God often chooses unlikely people to accomplish His purposes.
Second, obedience matters more than visibility. Arthur never became famous during most of his ministry. Yet his quiet faithfulness produced enormous impact. In a culture that often celebrates recognition, God values obedience.
Third, God can redeem any past. Arthur’s early life was marked by addiction, failure, and brokenness. Yet Christ transformed him completely. No life is beyond God’s grace.
Fourth, believers are called to live with eternity in view. The word Arthur wrote repeatedly points to a biblical truth: our lives on earth are temporary, but our relationship with God has eternal significance.
