📖 ✝️ Scripture Reading : Exodus 20:18-20
“When the people saw the thunder and lightning and heard the trumpet and saw the mountain in smoke, they trembled with fear. They stayed at a distance”

True reverence before God shakes us, purifies us, and steadies our hearts toward Him.
💒 🕊️ ✨ Imagine the scene at Mount Sinai: a trembling nation stands before the living God. Thunder roars, lightning flashes, and smoke ascends like a consuming fire — sensory awe overwhelms them. The people are not merely impressed; they are terrified. Their instinct is to flee, to hide, even to deny direct communion with God because they fear His holiness could cost them life itself. So they beg Moses to be their intermediary — “Speak to us instead of God, lest we die!” Their fear is raw and human: fear of power, fear of judgment, fear of God Himself.
Yet in the midst of this chaos, Moses speaks words that sound paradoxical: “Do not fear.” Why? Because God’s revelation in display was never meant to destroy them, but to reveal the holiness of God and to awaken a deeper kind of fear — not terror of death, but awe that drives obedience and life.
🤔 🪞 💡 This narrative makes us pause. Here stood an entire nation — recently delivered, yet still insecure in God’s presence. Their fear was instinctive, but incomplete. It was fear as distance, not fear as reverence. In human terms, fear often repels: it pushes us away from what is overwhelming or unknown. But the fear that God desires us to carry is not a fear that paralyzes; it is a holy reverence that anchors us toward obedience and away from sin. God didn’t want them to run; He wanted them to reflect and respond — to let the awesomeness of His presence reshape how they live.
The fear mentioned here isn’t about looming punishment — it is about respect for God’s character, awareness of His majesty, and transformation of one’s life. When we truly grasp the holiness of God, our sinfulness no longer feels casual, and our obedience becomes reasonable. That is the true purpose of fearing God: not dread of His power, but a heart tuned to His righteousness, so that we may not sin.

In 1742, in Cambuslang, Scotland, an extraordinary spiritual awakening took place known as The Cambuslang Work. Tens of thousands gathered on the “preaching braes” (Preaching braes = open hillsides where large outdoor Christian sermons were preached )to hear the gospel proclaimed. People were not merely entertained — they were deeply shaken by the sense of God’s presence. Many wept, some cried out in repentance, and others fell to their knees overwhelmed by the holiness of God. This wasn’t emotional hype; it was a collective reverence that led to transformed lives. Families reconciled, hearts softened, and many committed themselves to righteous living.
What had been a sleepy parish became a place where the fear of God — understood as overwhelming awe — led to genuine conviction and life change. The noise of revival was not the sound of hysteria but the sound of people grappling with the presence and majesty of God, and being changed by it.
