“You shall take a bunch of hyssop, dip it in the blood… and strike the lintel and the two doorposts with the blood.” (Exodus 12:22)
On the night of the first Passover, Israel used a simple plant—hyssop—to apply the lamb’s blood to their homes. This ordinary herb became the tool of extraordinary deliverance. Protection came, not by knowing about the blood, but by faithfully applying it as God commanded.
• Cleansing: Hyssop became a symbol of purification (Psalm 51:7). Just as Israel’s houses were cleansed from judgment, our hearts are cleansed by Christ.
• Faith in Action: The lamb’s blood saved, but hyssop applied it. Likewise, Jesus’ sacrifice saves us when we receive it personally by faith.
• Humility: God chose a lowly plant, showing He works through simple means to reveal His great power.
• Christ Foreshadowed: At the cross, hyssop reappears (John 19:29), linking the first Passover to the greater salvation in Jesus, the Lamb of God.
Am I living under the covering of Christ’s blood daily? Do I humbly allow God to cleanse hidden areas of my life?
Prayer
Lord, thank You for the blood of Jesus, my Passover Lamb. Purge me with hyssop, and I shall be clean. Help me to walk each day under Your covering and live in the freedom of Your salvation. Amen.
