It has been past almost 30 years now. This is a long waiting period to see that Jesus has not started working for establishment of His Kingdom. No miracles performed yet. No sermon or public discourse given yet. Mary has been waiting so long to see Jesus begun His ministry on earth. The Angel of God had said to Mary,” And behold, you will conceive in your womb and bring forth a Son, and shall call His name Jesus . He will be great, and will be called the Son of the Highest; and the Lord God will give Him the throne of His father David. And He will reign over the house of Jacob forever, and of His kingdom there will be no end”(Luke 1:31-33).
Mary was yet to see the glimpse of Jesus’ greatness as promised to her by the angel of God.
Now, Jesus had been baptized by John the Baptist. John bore the witness that Jesus is the Son of God. Jesus was led by the Spirit into the desert to be tempted by the devil. Jesus fasted for forty days and forty nights. Jesus was tempted on three occasions but He was victorious in the temptation. The devil left him and angels came and attended him. As Jesus was walking beside the Sea of Galilee, He called five disciples to follow Him. Till now Jesus has not openly begun His task of becoming the Messiah.
On that day, Jesus was attending the wedding at Cana with mother Mary and His disciples.(see John 2: 1-11) When they ran out of wine , Mary was concerned. She felt that now is the time for Jesus to do something. Now , the time has arrived that Jesus should make His presence felt. Now is the time to perform a miracle and show the world that here is the Son of God from the tribe of Judah who is going to sit on the throne of David.
And when they ran out of wine, the mother of Jesus said to Him, “They have no wine.” Jesus said to her, “Woman, what does your concern have to do with Me? My hour has not yet come.”
(John 2:3-4)
Here, Jesus is addressing His mother as “Woman” that seems most rude to us.
However, in the original language, and in Jewish culture, Mary would not have interpreted Jesus’ words that way. The term woman was used like we use the term ma’am. By addressing Mary this way, Jesus does distance Himself from His mother somewhat—He was exerting His independence from her wishes—but in no way was it a rude manner of speaking. Jesus lovingly uses the same word from the cross when He tells Mary that He is entrusting her to John’s care (see John 19:26).
Jesus concludes His statement to Mary with, “My hour has not yet come.” It means that Jesus was constantly working as per God’s timetable. So, He wasn’t going to reveal His power sooner than God the Father intended (see John 5:30).
Today , when the world is facing pandemic we all are wondering about its cure. It is soothing to know that Jesus did His first miracle that wedding day in the Cana of Galilee. We have to wait for God’s timing to help the doctor and scientists to find the vaccine. We hope that one of the follower of Christ Jesus finds out the cure and give the testimony which the world will listen. Everyone on earth today knows about the pandemic and so everyone will know the power of Christ Jesus. A doctor does the treatment but healing comes from God. At the name of Jesus every knee should bow, of those in heaven, and of those on earth, and of those under the earth, and that every tongue should confess that Jesus Christ is Lord, to the glory of God the Father. (Philippians 2:10-11)
