🌅 Following the Example of Our Savior
When a skilled craftsman begins an important project, he carefully prepares every tool before the work starts. Preparation often remains unseen, yet it is essential to the success of the task ahead. The public result depends upon private preparation.
The earthly ministry of Jesus Christ reveals a similar pattern. Before He preached, healed, taught, and ultimately went to the Cross, the Holy Spirit was actively involved in His life and ministry. From His miraculous conception to His testing in the wilderness and His anointing for service, the Spirit was continually at work.
This truth should inspire us. If the sinless Son of God willingly lived in dependence upon the Holy Spirit during His earthly ministry, how much more should we depend upon the Spirit in our daily lives?
As we reflect on the Spirit’s relationship to Christ, we discover a beautiful picture of God’s redemptive plan and learn how the Spirit continues to shape believers into Christlikeness today.
📖 The Spirit’s Ministry in the Life of Jesus
Luke, writing to strengthen the faith of believers, records the miraculous announcement of Jesus’ birth. In Luke 1:35, the angel explained to Mary that the Holy Spirit would come upon her and that the child to be born would be called the Son of God. This was not a natural conception but a supernatural work of God. The Holy Spirit played a direct role in the incarnation, demonstrating both Christ’s true humanity and His divine identity.
Matthew 4:1 tells us that after His baptism, Jesus was led by the Spirit into the wilderness to be tested. This is a remarkable detail. The Spirit did not lead Jesus away from God’s will but directly into a place of testing where His obedience would be demonstrated.
Acts 10:38 further declares that God anointed Jesus of Nazareth with the Holy Spirit and with power. The word “anointed” carries the idea of being set apart and empowered for a divine mission. Through the Spirit’s enabling presence, Jesus faithfully carried out the Father’s will.
The key Greek term is chriō, meaning “to anoint.” This word emphasizes divine appointment and empowerment. The Messiah, whose title means “Anointed One,” perfectly fulfilled His calling through the Spirit’s power.
To the original audience, these passages revealed that Jesus’ ministry was accomplished according to God’s plan and under the Spirit’s direction. Every stage of His earthly life displayed perfect obedience and complete dependence upon the Father through the Holy Spirit.

🔍 Seeing the Spirit’s Work in the Perfect Son
These passages reveal the Holy Spirit as the divine Empowerer who was actively involved in the earthly life and ministry of Jesus Christ. He is not merely an influence but a divine Person working within God’s redemptive plan.
The Spirit conceived Christ in the virgin womb, led Him into the wilderness, and anointed Him for ministry. Throughout Jesus’ earthly life, the Spirit strengthened and empowered Him for faithful obedience.
Theologically, these truths highlight the unique relationship within the Trinity. The Father sent the Son, the Son willingly obeyed the Father’s will, and the Holy Spirit empowered the Son’s earthly ministry. Each Person of the Godhead worked in perfect harmony for the accomplishment of redemption.
This theme runs throughout Scripture. The promised Messiah would be empowered by the Spirit, and Jesus fulfilled those prophecies perfectly. His Spirit-filled life became the pattern for all who would follow Him. The same Spirit who empowered Christ now dwells within believers, enabling us to honor God and serve faithfully.
🚶 Walking in the Power That Pointed to Christ
The timeless truth of this passage is that God’s work is accomplished through the power of the Holy Spirit. Even Jesus, in His earthly ministry, demonstrated complete dependence upon the Spirit’s guidance and strength.
We see evidence of the Spirit’s work today whenever believers grow in obedience, resist temptation, serve others faithfully, and display the fruit of Christlike character. Love, humility, wisdom, peace, and perseverance are signs of His ongoing ministry.
In our personal walk, we should begin each day by acknowledging our dependence upon the Holy Spirit. In church life, we should serve with humility, recognizing that spiritual effectiveness comes from God’s power rather than our abilities. In daily living, we should seek the Spirit’s guidance when facing temptations, decisions, and opportunities for service.
A common misunderstanding is that dependence upon the Holy Spirit means passivity. Jesus shows us the opposite. Spirit-filled living involves active obedience, faithful service, and wholehearted submission to God’s will.
Central Message: Because the Holy Spirit prepared, guided, and empowered Jesus for His mission, we must depend upon the Spirit as we follow Christ and serve God.
