Matthew, writing primarily to a Jewish audience, presents Jesus as the promised Messiah and King. In Matthew 3, Jesus comes to John the Baptist at the Jordan River. Although John initially hesitates, recognizing Jesus’ superiority, Jesus insists that this baptism is necessary “to fulfill all righteousness.”
The passage unfolds in three interconnected movements. First, Jesus, the Son, enters the water. Second, the Spirit of God descends like a dove and rests upon Him. Third, the Father speaks from heaven, declaring His pleasure in His beloved Son. These three actions occur simultaneously, emphasizing both the unity and distinction of the Father, Son, and Holy Spirit.
Historically, baptism was associated with repentance and preparation for God’s coming kingdom. Yet Jesus, being sinless, did not need repentance. Instead, He identified with humanity and publicly inaugurated His earthly ministry.
A significant Greek word in this passage is agapētos (“beloved”). The Father’s declaration identifies Jesus as the uniquely loved Son who perfectly fulfills God’s redemptive purposes. This term communicates both affection and divine approval.
The imagery of the Spirit descending “like a dove” is especially meaningful. Matthew does not claim the Spirit is a dove but uses a comparison to describe the gentle, visible manner of His descent. Before application can be made, we must recognize what the text clearly teaches: the Father is God, the Son is God, the Holy Spirit is God, yet they are distinct persons acting in perfect unity.

This passage reveals the Holy Spirit as a divine Person, not merely an impersonal force or influence. He acts intentionally, descends visibly, and actively participates in the mission of Christ.

The Spirit’s descent upon Jesus also demonstrates divine empowerment for ministry. Although Jesus is fully God, His earthly ministry models dependence upon the Spirit. In the same way, believers are called to rely upon the Spirit’s power rather than their own strength.
