During a visit to her parents, three men reportedly came separately seeking help for their young wives during difficult childbirth. Ida had no medical training and could not provide the necessary treatment. Her father was a doctor, but the husbands would not permit a male physician to attend their wives because of the social customs they followed.
CMC’s official histories record that the women and their babies died. The experience exposed a devastating shortage: many Indian women needed trained female physicians but had little access to them.

Ida returned to the United States and studied medicine, graduating from Cornell University Medical College in 1899. She then returned to India as a qualified physician in 1900.
Her decision illustrates an important feature of Christian obedience: compassion must be joined with preparation, discipline, and integrity. Depending upon Christ does not excuse careless work. Rather, love for one’s neighbour can motivate rigorous learning and responsible professional service.
Ida’s path was not instant expansion. It involved years of education, fundraising, cooperation, administration, and perseverance before wider work became possible.

In Vellore, Ida began treating women in a small clinic with one bed and a window through which medicines were dispensed. In 1902, the forty-bed Mary Taber Schell Memorial Hospital opened with funds provided in memory of Mary Taber Schell.
The ministry continued developing through clinical care, village outreach, nursing education, and medical training. Formal nurse training began in 1909, followed by a medical school for women in 1918.
Over succeeding decades, this organized service developed into Christian Medical College Vellore. Its growth came through many workers and supporters, not through one person alone. The institution joined compassionate patient care with education, research, and the preparation of healthcare professionals.
