🧭 When Small Choices Matter
Every day brings choices that seem ordinary: whom to trust, whether to remain faithful, and how to respond when life changes. Yet Scripture shows that small decisions can reveal the direction of our hearts. Ruth’s story teaches us to learn God’s truth, understand His purposes, and wisely live that truth through faithful choices.
🌾 Ruth Chooses Faithfulness
Ruth lived during the days when the judges ruled, a spiritually unstable period in Israel’s history. After her husband died, she faced an uncertain future in Moab. Her mother-in-law Naomi, also widowed, decided to return to Bethlehem. Ruth could have remained in Moab and pursued a more familiar future, but she chose to stay with Naomi.
Ruth’s decision was more than family loyalty. She committed herself to Naomi’s people and Naomi’s God: “thy people shall be my people, and thy God my God” (Ruth 1:16). In Bethlehem, Ruth did not demand an easy life. She humbly gathered grain behind the harvesters, trusting God’s provision. Boaz noticed her faithfulness and protected her.
Through ordinary decisions, Ruth walked into God’s providential care. Her marriage to Boaz brought security, and their son Obed became the grandfather of David. Ruth, a Moabite woman, was brought into the covenant story through God’s gracious providence.

KNOWLEDGE 📖
Ruth learned that faithfulness to God was worth more than returning to familiar security. She came to identify herself with Naomi’s people and God.
UNDERSTANDING 🔎
Ruth’s understanding grew through costly circumstances. She could not see the future, but she trusted the God she had chosen. Her willingness to work humbly in the fields showed that faith was becoming practical. She learned that God’s purposes can unfold through ordinary obedience.
WISDOM 🛡️
Ruth applied what she believed through loyalty, humility, diligence, and courage. She did not control the outcome; she faithfully did what was right before God. Her choices became part of a much larger story than she could see.
🌍 Mary Slessor – Faithful in Calabar
Mary Slessor grew up in poverty in Scotland and began working in a mill as a child. In 1876, at twenty-eight, she went to Calabar in West Africa as a missionary. She learned the local Efik language, lived among local people, taught children, and served through illness and difficult conditions.
Her faithfulness was expressed through years of ordinary service. She cared for abandoned children, opposed harmful practices, and worked for the dignity and protection of vulnerable people. She also served as a vice-consul and in local courts, using her position to pursue justice.
Slessor’s story shows knowledge becoming understanding and then wisdom: she knew Christ’s call to serve, learned through experience that love required patient presence, and consistently acted on that conviction. Her lasting influence came not from one dramatic decision, but from faithful choices repeated over many years.

Ruth reminds us that wise living often begins with ordinary decisions. Study God’s Word before making important choices. Keep commitments when they become inconvenient. Choose character over popularity. Serve faithfully in unnoticed places. Trust God with outcomes you cannot control.
✝️ God’s Grace in Ruth’s Story
Ruth’s story ultimately points beyond Ruth to Christ. God used her faithfulness within His redemptive plan, and Matthew 1:5 places Ruth in the genealogy of Jesus. Her story reminds us that salvation rests on God’s grace, not human merit. In Christ, we receive wisdom to live faithfully and become part of His purposes.
