🌱 When Leadership Becomes Too Heavy
Sometimes sincere service creates an unhealthy burden. We may believe that doing everything ourselves proves commitment, yet refusing help can produce exhaustion and limit others from serving. Moses faced this danger. Though chosen by God, he still needed the wisdom of another person. His story reminds us that spiritual maturity includes being humble enough to receive counsel.
🏕️ Moses Learns to Share the Burden
Israel had recently experienced God’s deliverance from Egypt and was journeying toward the promised land. Moses was serving as judge, listening to the people’s disputes from morning until evening. Jethro, his father-in-law, observed this and recognized the problem: Moses was carrying more responsibility than one person could sustain.
Jethro asked why Moses alone was judging the people. Moses explained that the people came to him to inquire of God and settle disputes. Jethro then gave wise counsel: Moses should continue representing the people before God and teaching God’s laws, but he should appoint capable, trustworthy men to handle ordinary matters.
Moses could have defended his leadership or ignored his father-in-law. Instead, he listened and acted. Exodus 18:24 says, “So Moses hearkened to the voice of his father in law.” He accepted wise counsel and reorganized the work. God’s purposes were not weakened by delegation; they were strengthened through wise leadership.

KNOWLEDGE — Recognize the Truth 📖
Moses learned that God’s work does not require one person to carry every responsibility. Leadership includes limits, shared responsibility, and developing trustworthy people.
UNDERSTANDING — Grasp the Principle 💡
Jethro helped Moses see what he could not clearly see while immersed in daily responsibilities. Moses understood that delegation was not weakness. It could protect both the leader and the people while allowing others to serve.
WISDOM — Live the Truth 🛠️
Moses acted on what he learned. He selected capable men and entrusted responsibility to them. Biblical wisdom is not merely receiving good advice; it is humbly putting godly counsel into practice.
👥 Charles Simeon – Multiplying Teachable Leadership
Charles Simeon (1759–1836), an Anglican minister at Holy Trinity Church, Cambridge, experienced the importance of godly counsel himself. Early in ministry, he received significant spiritual influence from older evangelical leaders, including Henry Venn. Rather than keeping ministry knowledge to himself, Simeon later invested deeply in students and young ministers.
He taught, encouraged, advised, and trained men who would carry the gospel into other places. Historical accounts describe his long-term influence on a large generation of evangelical ministers. Simeon’s life illustrates a vital progression: he received truth, learned through godly relationships and experience, and then applied that wisdom by developing others.
His leadership became fruitful not merely because he preached, but because he helped others become faithful servants of Christ.

✝️ Wisdom That Points to Christ
Jesus is the perfect model of teachable, servant leadership. He invested in disciples, entrusted them with ministry, corrected them patiently, and prepared them to serve others. Christian maturity means learning from Christ, submitting to His Word, and helping others grow. True wisdom is ultimately found in Christ, “in whom are hid all the treasures of wisdom and knowledge” (Colossians 2:3).
