🏡 A Home Built on Scripture
Susanna Wesley (1669–1742) lived in England during a period of spiritual decline and social change. As the wife of Anglican minister Samuel Wesley, she managed a large household while enduring financial hardship, family loss, and frequent uncertainty. Several of her children died in infancy, and daily responsibilities were demanding. Despite these trials, Susanna believed God had entrusted her with a sacred calling: to raise her children according to Scripture. She established regular times for Bible instruction, prayer, and personal conversation with each child. Her confidence rested not in her own ability but in God’s promise that His Word accomplishes His purposes (Isaiah 55:11). Through Scripture, she learned that faithful discipleship begins at home, where hearts are shaped one day at a time by God’s truth.

God gradually deepened Susanna’s understanding through ordinary faithfulness rather than dramatic events. As she consistently taught Scripture, prayed with her children, and depended on the Lord during hardship, she witnessed His sustaining grace. Her circumstances did not suddenly improve, yet God’s presence remained constant. She discovered that spiritual growth is cultivated through perseverance, daily obedience, and trust in God’s sovereign timing.
Her letters reveal a deep desire that her children would know Christ personally rather than merely inherit religious habits. This reflects the biblical truth that God’s Word is able to make people “wise unto salvation through faith which is in Christ Jesus” (2 Timothy 3:15). Through years of unnoticed service, God transformed ordinary family life into a place where biblical truth was understood, cherished, and lived. Her example reminds believers that genuine understanding grows while walking faithfully with God, especially when results cannot yet be seen.
🌾 Wisdom That Endures
Susanna applied what God taught her by faithfully living according to His Word every day. She remained devoted to prayer, biblical instruction, and Christlike perseverance even when difficulties continued. God later used her influence in remarkable ways through her sons, John and Charles Wesley, whose ministries encouraged countless believers. Yet Susanna’s lasting legacy was not measured by their accomplishments but by her unwavering obedience to Christ. Her life demonstrates that wisdom is faithfully practicing God’s truth, trusting Him with both the present and the generations that follow.
