🧭 When Direction Feels Unclear
Many people struggle to know what God wants them to do. Voices from friends, social media, and personal desires can easily drown out His truth. Samuel faced a confusing time when God’s voice had become rare in Israel. Yet his willing heart teaches us that understanding God’s will begins with quietly listening to Him before taking action.
🌙 God Calls a Young Servant
Samuel served in the tabernacle under Eli during a spiritually declining period in Israel. The nation lacked faithful leadership, and God’s word was seldom heard. One night, Samuel repeatedly heard his name called. Thinking Eli needed him, he ran to the priest three times. Finally, Eli realized the Lord was speaking and instructed Samuel to answer, “Speak; for thy servant heareth.” Samuel obeyed. God entrusted him with a difficult message of judgment against Eli’s household because of persistent sin.
Though young, Samuel faithfully delivered God’s word without fear or compromise. As he continued listening to the Lord, God established him as a trustworthy prophet whose words proved true. Samuel’s life reminds us that God often prepares willing listeners before He entrusts them with greater responsibility. His obedience began not with speaking, but with listening, and that humble response shaped the rest of his ministry.
🌱 Growing in Knowledge, Understanding, and Wisdom
📘 KNOWLEDGE — Hearing God’s Voice
Samuel learned that God still speaks to those who belong to Him. The Lord was not silent because He lacked words but because faithful listeners were rare.
💡 UNDERSTANDING — Recognizing God’s Call
Through Eli’s guidance and repeated encounters, Samuel understood that God’s voice deserved humble attention. Listening required surrender, reverence, and readiness to receive even difficult truth.
👣 WISDOM — Obeying What God Said
Samuel faithfully proclaimed God’s message despite its personal cost. Wisdom was demonstrated through courageous obedience. Genuine spiritual maturity is revealed not by merely hearing God but by faithfully living according to His Word.
🌍 John G. Paton: Listening Before Going
John G. Paton sensed God’s call to serve as a missionary among the people of the New Hebrides (now Vanuatu), where many missionaries had previously lost their lives. Rather than acting impulsively, Paton devoted himself to Scripture, earnest prayer, and seeking God’s direction. He became convinced that Christ’s command to make disciples was worth every sacrifice. Understanding God’s call strengthened his courage when others urged him to stay home.
Paton obeyed and faithfully served for decades, translating Scripture, planting churches, and witnessing many lives transformed by the gospel. Like Samuel, he first learned to listen before stepping forward in obedience. His life demonstrates that knowledge of God’s Word produces understanding through prayer, and wisdom is shown by courageously following God’s call wherever He leads.

✝️ Christ, the Perfect Listener
Jesus perfectly listened to and obeyed His Father’s will, even to the cross. Through Christ, believers receive the Holy Spirit, who helps them understand God’s Word and walk in faithful obedience. True wisdom is found by following the One who perfectly heard and fulfilled the Father’s voice.
