Jeremiah Lanphier, a businessman who became a city missionary through the North Dutch Church, was burdened to encourage ordinary people toward prayer. Believing that Scripture consistently calls God’s people to seek Him, he organized a weekly noon prayer meeting in a rented room. On the first day, only a few people arrived. From a human perspective, the meeting appeared insignificant. God used ordinary believers praying together to encourage repentance, renewed faith, and gospel witness. Lanphier did not manufacture revival; he simply remained faithful where God had placed him. Through these unfolding events, he came to understand that God often prepares hearts through persistent prayer before pouring out visible blessing. Scripture repeatedly teaches believers to pray without ceasing (1 Thessalonians 5:17) and to remain steadfast in faith (Colossians 4:2). Walking daily with God transformed knowledge into understanding, revealing that the Lord alone gives spiritual increase in His perfect time.
