🧭 Waiting Without Preparation
Many people assume there will always be more time—to study God’s Word, strengthen their faith, or obey His calling. Yet opportunities often arrive without warning. Jesus used the parable of the ten virgins to remind His followers that spiritual readiness cannot be borrowed or delayed. True wisdom prepares before the decisive moment comes.
🕯️ The Lamps That Went Out
During the final week before His crucifixion, Jesus taught His disciples about His future return through several parables. In the story of the ten virgins, all expected the bridegroom’s arrival and carried lamps. Five were wise because they brought extra oil, while five were foolish because they assumed their lamps alone would be enough. When the bridegroom arrived unexpectedly at midnight, the foolish virgins discovered their oil had run out. While they hurried away to buy more, the wedding procession entered the banquet, and the door was shut. Their last-minute effort came too late.
The problem was not ignorance of the bridegroom but failure to prepare. Jesus concluded with a solemn warning to remain watchful because no one knows the exact time of His coming. The parable teaches that genuine faith is revealed through continual readiness, faithful obedience, and a life prepared for Christ rather than careless delay.

📘 KNOWLEDGE – Knowing Christ Will Return
The virgins knew a bridegroom was coming. Likewise, believers know Christ has promised to return and calls His followers to remain watchful, faithful, and spiritually prepared every day.
💡 UNDERSTANDING – Preparation Cannot Be Borrowed
When the lamps began to fail, the foolish virgins realized another person’s preparation could not replace their own. Spiritual maturity grows through a personal relationship with Christ, regular prayer, obedience, and time in God’s Word.
👣 WISDOM – Living Ready Every Day
Wisdom is not fearful waiting but faithful living. We prepare by walking with Christ consistently, serving others, resisting spiritual complacency, and responding quickly whenever God calls. Daily faithfulness is the evidence of a ready heart.
🙏 The Fulton Street Prayer Revival: Prepared Before the Harvest
In 1857, businessman-turned-city missionary Jeremiah Lanphier sensed New York needed prayer long before revival became visible. He faithfully organized a simple weekly noon prayer meeting. At the first gathering, only a handful attended, yet he continued without discouragement. As financial panic spread across America, increasing numbers sought God, and the prayer meetings multiplied into a nationwide revival that influenced thousands.
Lanphier understood that God often prepares hearts before He sends visible blessing. Rather than waiting for revival, he cultivated readiness through persistent prayer and faith. His example mirrors the wise virgins: knowledge of God’s faithfulness led to understanding that preparation mattered, and wisdom was shown through steadfast obedience before opportunities appeared. God honored a prepared servant by using him in a remarkable spiritual awakening.
