🌱 When Success Becomes Our Security
Many people dream of financial stability, career success, and a comfortable future. While planning is wise, our hearts can quietly begin trusting possessions more than God. Jesus addressed this danger through the parable of the rich fool, reminding us that earthly success without eternal purpose is spiritual poverty. True wisdom begins when God becomes the center of every plan.
🌾 The Barns That Could Not Save
Jesus told this parable while teaching about greed and eternal priorities. A wealthy farmer experienced an unusually abundant harvest. Instead of thanking God or sharing with those in need, he focused entirely on himself. He decided to tear down his barns and build larger ones to store his crops, believing his wealth guaranteed years of ease, pleasure, and security. His repeated use of “I” and “my” revealed a heart centered on possessions rather than the Lord.
Yet God interrupted his plans with a sobering declaration: “Thou fool, this night thy soul shall be required of thee.” Everything he had accumulated would remain behind, and he would stand before God empty-handed. His failure was not diligence or hard work but living without reference to God’s will or eternal realities. Jesus concluded that anyone who stores up treasures only for themselves without being “rich toward God” has misunderstood the true purpose of life. Earthly wealth is temporary; faithful stewardship for God’s glory has eternal value.
🧭 Growing in Knowledge, Understanding, and Wisdom
📘 KNOWLEDGE: God Owns Everything
The rich man failed to recognize that every harvest, opportunity, and possession ultimately came from God. Scripture teaches that we are stewards, not owners, entrusted to manage His blessings faithfully.
💡 UNDERSTANDING: Earthly Plans Have Eternal Consequences
The farmer believed bigger barns could guarantee a better future. God revealed that life itself is fragile and cannot be secured by wealth. Lasting security is found only through a right relationship with Him and an eternal perspective.
👣 WISDOM: Live Rich Toward God
Biblical wisdom means making every decision—financial, vocational, and personal—with God’s kingdom first. Wise believers plan carefully, give generously, depend prayerfully, and hold earthly possessions loosely because their greatest treasure is Christ.
🕊️ Ole Hallesby: Dependence Beyond Possessions
Norwegian theologian Ole Hallesby (1879–1961) faithfully reminded Christians that real security is never found in wealth or careful planning but in daily dependence upon God. Through his influential book Prayer and decades of ministry, he taught that prayer is the believer’s continual expression of trusting God rather than personal resources. Hallesby encouraged Christians to see every blessing as God’s gift and every need as an opportunity to rely upon His faithful provision.
His life demonstrated that faithful stewardship includes surrendering plans, ambitions, and material security to the Lord. He understood that possessions cannot preserve life, but communion with God prepares believers for eternity. His example helps us grow from knowing that God provides, to understanding our complete dependence upon Him, and finally to wisely living each day with open hands and hearts fixed on eternal treasures.

✝️ Christ, Our Greatest Treasure
Jesus never condemned wise planning but exposed hearts that exclude God. Christ became poor for our sake so we might receive eternal riches through Him. As His disciples, we grow in maturity by seeking His kingdom first and trusting Him above every earthly possession.
