🌙 A Question in the Night
Many people know Bible stories, attend church, and can explain Christian beliefs, yet still struggle to experience genuine spiritual transformation. Knowledge alone cannot remove confusion or produce new life. Nicodemus faced this very challenge. His journey reminds us that true wisdom begins when humble hearts allow God’s truth to move from the mind into the soul.
🕯️ A Teacher Meets the True Teacher
Nicodemus was a respected Pharisee and a member of the Jewish ruling council. He understood the Scriptures and recognized that Jesus’ miracles pointed to God’s power. Yet he visited Jesus secretly at night, seeking answers. Instead of discussing religious achievements, Jesus immediately declared that no one could enter God’s kingdom without being born again. Nicodemus misunderstood, thinking only in physical terms, asking how an old man could be born a second time.
Jesus patiently explained that spiritual birth comes through the work of the Holy Spirit, not human effort or religious status. The conversation exposed the difference between knowing God’s Word and understanding God’s saving purpose. Later, Nicodemus defended Jesus before other leaders (John 7:50–51) and helped prepare His body for burial after the crucifixion (John 19:39–40). His story reveals a gradual movement from curiosity toward courageous faith as Christ opened his spiritual eyes.
🌱 Growing in Knowledge, Understanding, and Wisdom
KNOWLEDGE
Nicodemus knew God’s Law and recognized Jesus as a teacher sent from God. He possessed accurate religious information but lacked the central truth that salvation is God’s gracious work through spiritual rebirth.
UNDERSTANDING
Jesus revealed that entering God’s kingdom requires being “born again.” The Greek word anōthen can mean “again” or “from above,” showing that new life comes from God, not human achievement. Humility opened the door to deeper understanding.
WISDOM
Nicodemus gradually responded to Christ’s teaching. He publicly defended Jesus and later honored Him at His burial despite personal risk. Genuine wisdom is shown by obedient faith that follows Christ, not merely by possessing religious knowledge.
🌍 A Life Changed by God’s Truth
C. S. Lewis was a brilliant professor at Oxford University who loved learning and could explain philosophy and literature with remarkable skill. Yet for many years he rejected Christianity, believing human reason alone could answer life’s deepest questions. Through honest conversations with Christian friends such as J. R. R. Tolkien and careful study of Scripture, Lewis gradually realized that Jesus Christ was not merely a great moral teacher but the risen Son of God.
This new understanding transformed his life. He humbled himself before Christ, placed his faith in Him, and devoted his gifts to explaining the Christian faith with clarity and compassion. Through books such as Mere Christianity and The Chronicles of Narnia, Lewis helped millions move from intellectual curiosity to genuine faith in Christ. His life reminds us that knowledge becomes true wisdom only when it leads to humble surrender, spiritual understanding, and faithful obedience to Jesus.

Nicodemus discovered that eternal life is found not in religious achievement but in Jesus Christ. Through His death and resurrection, Christ gives the new birth that no human effort can produce. In Him “are hid all the treasures of wisdom and knowledge” (Colossians 2:3), leading believers into mature discipleship.
