Lewis reminds us that genuine wisdom grows as we move from learning God’s truth, to understanding His purposes, and finally to living in faithful obedience to Jesus Christ.
📖 Learning God’s Truth
Clive Staples Lewis was born in Belfast, Ireland, in 1898. As a young boy he was introduced to Christianity, but after personal loss and intellectual struggles, he gradually abandoned his faith. He later became a distinguished scholar and professor at Oxford University, earning respect for his remarkable understanding of literature, philosophy, and language. Although Lewis possessed extraordinary intellectual ability, he believed that human reason alone could explain life’s greatest mysteries. Yet God had not abandoned him. Through friendships with faithful Christians, especially J. R. R. Tolkien, and through reading both Scripture and Christian writings, God gently confronted Lewis with the truth that Jesus Christ is not merely an inspiring teacher but the living Son of God.
Lewis began learning that true wisdom begins with God’s revelation rather than human intellect.
💡 Growing in Understanding
God patiently deepened Lewis’s understanding over time. Honest conversations with believing friends challenged his assumptions, while careful reading of the Gospels revealed the person and claims of Christ. Lewis recognized that the evidence pointed beyond admiration for Jesus to wholehearted faith in Him. He later described his conversion as God overcoming his resistance with persistent grace. Scripture teaches that “The fear of the LORD is the beginning of wisdom” (Proverbs 9:10), and Lewis experienced this truth personally. Lewis faithfully used the gifts God had entrusted to him for Christ’s glory. Rather than pursuing recognition for his own brilliance, he wrote to help ordinary people understand the Christian faith. Books such as Mere Christianity and The Chronicles of Narnia have guided countless readers toward biblical truth and deeper trust in Jesus. His enduring influence was not simply the result of intelligence but of a life surrendered to God’s purposes. Lewis demonstrated that wisdom is faithfully living the truth God has revealed, allowing every gift to point others to Christ instead of ourselves.
