Seeking Wisdom Before Success
Many believers face moments when competing voices offer conflicting directions. Some encourage ambition, while others point us toward humble obedience to God. In such moments, wise spiritual counsel can shape an entire lifetime. The story of William Wilberforce reminds us that God often guides His children through faithful mentors, biblical truth, and patient perseverance rather than quick success.
Before God Opened the Way
William Wilberforce entered the British Parliament in the late eighteenth century as a gifted young politician. Although respected for his abilities, he experienced a deep spiritual awakening that transformed his priorities. As he considered leaving politics to pursue a quieter Christian life, he sought guidance from older believers rather than relying on his own understanding. Among them was John Newton, the former slave trader whose conversion through God’s grace led him to become an Anglican pastor and the author of the hymn Amazing Grace. Newton urged Wilberforce to remain in public service, believing that God could use him there for His glory. Instead of seeking popularity or personal advancement, Wilberforce accepted this wise counsel. The challenge before him was enormous. The British slave trade was deeply established, politically influential, and financially profitable. Humanly speaking, lasting change seemed unlikely.
God’s Faithful Hand at Work
God did not remove every obstacle, but He faithfully strengthened Wilberforce through Scripture, prayer, Christian fellowship, and years of perseverance.
His confidence rested not in political influence but in the Lord who rules over history. As Proverbs teaches, safety is found in wise counsel, and Wilberforce experienced this truth throughout his life. Encouraged by John Newton and other mature believers, he continued serving with humility instead of discouragement. Over many years he worked peacefully and persistently against the slave trade while seeking to honor Christ in public life. God used ordinary means—faithful friendships, biblical conviction, patient endurance, and open doors in His providence—to accomplish purposes far greater than one man’s abilities. In 1807 Parliament abolished the British slave trade, and shortly before Wilberforce’s death in 1833, legislation was passed that led to the abolition of slavery throughout most of the British Empire. Throughout the journey, the glory belonged to God, whose sovereign purposes never fail.
Growing Through Faithful Obedience
Wilberforce’s greatest legacy was not political success but a life shaped by submission to Christ. He demonstrated that lasting influence grows from daily faithfulness rather than personal greatness. God’s grace produced humility, endurance, and compassion within him, enabling him to continue serving despite disappointment, opposition, and physical weakness. His testimony reminds believers that the Lord often works slowly, preparing hearts before revealing His larger purposes. Faithfulness to God’s calling leaves an eternal influence because He is the One who brings lasting fruit.

Looking to Christ Through History
This account reveals that God delights in using humble believers who depend upon Him instead of trusting their own wisdom. Scripture repeatedly calls God’s people to seek wise counsel, remain steadfast, and commit their ways to the Lord (Proverbs 3:5–6; Galatians 6:9). Wilberforce’s story points beyond itself to Jesus Christ, the perfectly righteous King who always obeyed His Father’s will. Every faithful servant reflects only a small glimpse of Christ’s perfect obedience, compassion, and perseverance. Our hope is never found in remarkable people but in the Savior who continues building His kingdom through ordinary believers surrendered to His grace.

Perhaps God has placed wise believers around you today. Receive their counsel with humility, trust God’s timing, and continue obeying Christ even when progress seems slow. The Lord is faithful to accomplish His purposes through those who remain steadfast in Him.
