Ignoring Godly Counsel
Many wrong decisions begin with a desire to protect our pride rather than seek God’s wisdom. We often prefer advice that agrees with our feelings instead of counsel that challenges our hearts. Rehoboam faced such a moment at the beginning of his reign. His response teaches that spiritual maturity is not measured by authority but by humility before God and willingness to listen to wise counsel.
A Kingdom Divided
After King Solomon died, Rehoboam became king over Israel. The people requested lighter burdens than those imposed during Solomon’s later years. Rehoboam first consulted the older counselors who had faithfully served his father. They advised him to answer the people with kindness, promising that servant leadership would win lasting loyalty. Instead, Rehoboam rejected their wisdom and sought advice from his younger companions, who urged him to display greater power and harshness.
Choosing pride over wisdom, Rehoboam threatened the people with even heavier burdens. His harsh words fulfilled what God had already declared concerning the division of the kingdom because of Solomon’s unfaithfulness. Yet Rehoboam remained responsible for his own sinful choice. Ten tribes rebelled under Jeroboam, leaving Rehoboam to rule only Judah and Benjamin. A kingdom that could have experienced peace instead suffered painful division because its leader refused humble, godly counsel. His story reminds every believer that leadership without teachability leads to unnecessary loss.
Growing Through Wise Counsel
KNOWLEDGE
Rehoboam knew the people’s request and heard wise, experienced counsel. God places mature believers around us because His wisdom is often communicated through faithful instruction.
UNDERSTANDING
Knowledge alone was not enough. Rehoboam failed to recognize that true strength is expressed through humility and servant leadership. The Hebrew emphasis behind wisdom in Proverbs points beyond intelligence to skillful living that honors God. Pride prevented him from discerning the value of godly advice.
WISDOM
Wisdom listens carefully before acting. Followers of Christ weigh decisions against Scripture, pray sincerely, and welcome correction from spiritually mature believers. Wise leadership serves others instead of protecting personal pride. When we submit our plans to God’s truth and seek faithful counsel, we avoid many painful consequences and reflect Christ’s character.
A Leader Who Chose Humble Counsel
When William Wilberforce entered British politics, he sought the guidance of older believers, especially John Newton, the former slave trader who became a faithful pastor. Newton encouraged Wilberforce to remain in public service and pursue God’s calling with humility. Rather than relying only on ambitious political voices, Wilberforce welcomed wise spiritual counsel. Strengthened by biblical conviction and patient perseverance, he spent decades laboring against the slave trade until Parliament finally abolished it.
His life demonstrates that listening to godly mentors can shape decisions that bless generations. Wise counsel does not always promise immediate success, but it often leads to faithful obedience and lasting influence for God’s kingdom.

Walking in Wisdom Today
Seek biblical counsel before making major decisions. Welcome correction without becoming defensive. Compare every opinion with God’s Word. Develop friendships with spiritually mature believers. Lead others with humility and a servant’s heart.
Christ, Our Perfect Wisdom
Unlike Rehoboam, Jesus perfectly listened to and obeyed His Father. Christ is “the wisdom of God” (1 Corinthians 1:24) and the perfect King whose leadership brings unity instead of division. As we follow Him, He transforms proud hearts into teachable disciples who grow in knowledge, understanding, and wisdom.
