Ruth’s story unfolds during the time of the Judges—a period marked by instability, moral decline, and uncertainty in Israel.
Society was agricultural, and survival depended on land access and manual labor. Foreigners, widows, and the poor were vulnerable and dependent on others’ kindness.
The Book of Ruth begins with loss—Naomi loses her husband and sons, leaving her in deep grief and poverty. Ruth, her daughter-in-law, chooses to remain with her.
Ruth’s famous declaration (Ruth 1:16) shows covenant loyalty:
“Whither thou goest, I will go… thy people shall be my people, and thy God my God.”
The Hebrew word “hesed” (loving-kindness, covenant loyalty) describes Ruth’s commitment.
When they return to Bethlehem, Ruth immediately takes responsibility.

After a childhood accident left him physically disabled, his opportunities seemed limited. He spent his days repairing shoes in a small workshop.
By the world’s standards, his life appeared ordinary and unnoticed.
But God used his quiet diligence in extraordinary ways.
One day, he took in a poor boy who needed help. He began teaching him reading, writing, and basic life skills—using the little knowledge and resources he had.
Soon, more children from poor neighborhoods started gathering in his workshop.
Without formal education, funding, or recognition, Pounds:
* Taught children daily in his small space
* Provided care, attention, and encouragement

To attract children, he would roast potatoes and invite them in—turning a small act of kindness into an opportunity for transformation.
