Gladys Aylward’s story reminds us that God does not look for qualifications, but for surrendered hearts.

In the early 1930s, Gladys Aylward was a simple housemaid in England. She had no formal theological training, no financial resources, and no influential connections. Yet deep within her heart, she sensed a clear calling from God—to go to China as a missionary.
When she applied to a missionary organization, she was rejected. They considered her unfit—uneducated and unprepared for such a demanding field.
From a human perspective, everything stood against her.
Her situation spoke loudly: “You are not capable. You are not qualified.”
Emotionally, she could have felt discouraged, inadequate, and uncertain. The path ahead was unclear and dangerous. Traveling alone across countries in that era was not only difficult—it was risky, especially for a woman with limited means.

During the Japanese invasion of China, her region became unsafe. Violence spread rapidly. In the middle of this crisis, Gladys found herself responsible for more than 100 orphaned children.
The situation was overwhelming.
In that moment, she had to decide—would she trust her fears or trust God?
Choosing faith over fear, she led the children on a dangerous journey through mountains toward safety.
This was not human strength—it was divine enablement.
Step by step, day by day, God sustained her.

The journey was long and exhausting. There were moments of hunger, fear, and near collapse. Yet Gladys continued, relying completely on God.
Miraculously, every single child reached safety.

She did not become powerful in herself—she became dependent on God.
