“Do not fear any of those things which you are about to suffer. Indeed, the devil is about to throw some of you into prison, that you may be tested, and you will have tribulation ten days. Be faithful until death, and I will give you the crown of life.”

In the ancient Roman city of Smyrna (modern-day Izmir, Turkey), emperor worship was not optional—it was enforced. Citizens were required to publicly declare “Caesar is Lord” as a sign of loyalty to the Empire. Refusal often meant imprisonment or death.
Christians faced intense persecution because they confessed only one Lord—Jesus Christ.
Polycarp, an elderly bishop around 86 years old, was a respected leader in the early Church and a direct disciple of the Apostle John. His life had been marked by decades of faithful service to Christ.
Yet now, he faced the greatest trial of his life.
The authorities sought him out. The pressure was immense. He was old, physically weak, and humanly vulnerable. Many believers around him had already been tortured or killed. Fear, uncertainty, and the threat of death loomed heavily.
From a human perspective, compromise would have been easy—just one sentence, one denial, and he could live.

“Eighty-six years I have served Him, and He has done me no wrong. How can I blaspheme my King who saved me?”

Even as he was sentenced to be burned alive, there was no panic—only peace.
