⏳ Background:
In 1994, Rwanda descended into one of the most devastating genocides in modern history. Ethnic violence between Hutus and Tutsis led to the brutal killing of nearly a million people within a span of 100 days.
Immaculée Ilibagiza was a young woman whose life was suddenly torn apart by this violence. Her family became targets. In fear for her life, she fled and found refuge in the home of a local pastor.
She was hidden in a tiny bathroom—barely enough space to stand—along with seven other women.
For 91 days, they remained in silence.
Outside, chaos reigned. Mobs searched houses, calling out names, killing without mercy. At times, the killers came so close that they could hear their voices just outside the door.
Inside that cramped space, Immaculée faced a different battle.
Fear gripped her heart.
Grief overwhelmed her as she learned her family had been killed.
Anger began to rise within her—anger toward those committing such evil.
She wrestled deeply with thoughts of revenge. The pain was real, and humanly, unforgiveness seemed justified.
But she also recognized her own limitations.

She could not even escape.

In that silence, Immaculée turned to prayer.
With only a Bible, she began to cry out to God—not once, but continuously.
At first, her prayers were filled with fear and desperation. But slowly, as she meditated on Scripture, God began to work within her heart.

Particularly, the command to love enemies became unavoidable.
God revealed something powerful to her: hatred would only destroy her from within.

She prayed for the very people who were killing her family.
