The night is silent, yet heavy with expectation.
Jesus sits on the Mount of Olives, just days away from the cross. Every word He speaks now carries eternal weight. This is no longer just teaching—it is preparation for what is to come.
He begins with an image His listeners know well—a wedding.
In Jewish culture, the bridegroom would arrive unexpectedly at night. The bridesmaids would wait with lamps, ready to light the way for the joyful procession.
Ten virgins stand waiting.
They look identical. They carry lamps. They belong to the same wedding party.
But beneath the surface lies a life-altering difference.
Five are wise—they bring extra oil.
Five are foolish—they do not.
The foolish are not ignorant—they are negligent. They assume readiness can wait.
Then comes the delay.
Time stretches. Excitement fades. Weariness sets in.
And something striking happens—all of them fall asleep.
But at midnight, a sudden cry breaks the silence: “Behold, the bridegroom is coming!”
Everything changes in an instant.
The virgins rise. Lamps are trimmed.
But the foolish discover a terrifying reality—their oil is gone. Their lamps flicker, then begin to die.
In panic, they plead: “Give us some of your oil.” But the answer is no.
Not out of selfishness—but truth.
Some things cannot be transferred at the last moment.
Faith cannot be borrowed. Readiness cannot be shared.
While they rush to fix what should have been prepared long before, the bridegroom arrives.
Those who are ready enter the feast.
And then—
the door is shut.
Later, the others return, desperate and pleading: “Lord, Lord, open to us!”
But the response is chilling: “I do not know you.”
Not lack of recognition—
but lack of relationship.
Jesus ends with a command: “Watch therefore.” Stay awake. Stay alert. Stay ready.
This is not just a story about waiting. It is a warning about readiness.

This parable exposes a sobering truth—looking like a believer is not the same as being prepared.
All ten virgins had lamps. All expected the bridegroom. All were part of the celebration. Yet only five were ready. The difference was not visible—it was internal.
The tragedy of the foolish virgins is not rebellion, but delay. They assumed there would always be more time. But when the moment came, time ran out.
This reflects the reality of God’s Kingdom. Entry is not based on outward identity, but inward readiness rooted in genuine faith.
The closed door represents finality. Just as in Noah’s day, when the ark was shut, there comes a moment when opportunity ends.
The oil symbolizes something deeply personal—a living relationship with God, sustained daily. It cannot be inherited. It cannot be borrowed. It cannot be rushed at the last moment.
This parable reveals both the mercy and justice of Christ. He delays—giving time for preparation. But He also returns—honoring those who are ready.
True faith is not proven in excitement, but in endurance.

During the Cold War, when Christianity was restricted across Eastern Europe, a Dutch missionary known as Brother Andrew felt called to smuggle Bibles into closed nations. Each journey carried immense risk.
Before crossing borders, he would pray:
“Lord, make seeing eyes blind.”
With Bibles openly placed in his car, he would approach heavily guarded checkpoints. And again and again, something remarkable happened.
Guards looked directly at the Scriptures—yet failed to see them. This was not coincidence. It was the power of God working through a prepared life.
But what made Andrew effective was not just courage—it was readiness.
Before the mission: a man rooted in prayer.
During the mission: a vessel of God’s power.
After the mission: a testimony of faithfulness.
Like the wise virgins, he carried “oil”—a deep, living dependence on God.
His life reminds us:
God uses those who are already prepared.

Be ready. God uses those who are already prepared.
