Throughout history, God has used ordinary people who chose extraordinary obedience. One such story is the life of Charles Thomas Studd, better known as C. T. Studd.
His journey shows what happens when a person stops admiring Christ from a distance and begins surrendering to Him completely. This story reminds us that following Jesus often requires sacrifice—but the eternal reward is far greater.

In the late 19th century, England celebrated its sporting heroes with great admiration. Among the brightest stars was Charles Thomas Studd, born in 1860 into a wealthy and influential family.
Studd attended University of Cambridge, where he became one of the most famous cricket players of his generation. He was part of the legendary Cambridge cricket team and represented England in international matches.
Cricket in Victorian England was more than a sport—it was a symbol of prestige, honor, and national pride. Studd had everything young men dreamed of:
Wealth and inheritance Fame and public recognition A promising career in athletics Social respect and influence
Yet despite the success, a deeper spiritual struggle existed beneath the surface.
Studd had grown up in a Christian household. His father had experienced conversion during evangelistic meetings led by Dwight L. Moody, a well-known preacher who traveled between United States and England preaching the gospel.
Although Studd respected Christianity, his faith remained largely intellectual and cultural. Like many young men of his time, he admired Christ but had not truly surrendered his life to Him.
Then tragedy struck.
Studd’s brother fell seriously ill. The possibility of death suddenly confronted the family. The experience forced Studd to think about eternal realities he had long ignored.
He later admitted that the fame, wealth, and success that once seemed so important suddenly appeared temporary and fragile.
🔥 Turning Point:
Everything changed during a meeting in London, where Studd attended a sermon preached by evangelist Dwight L. Moody.
Moody spoke with simple but piercing clarity about surrendering one’s life to Christ. His message was not merely about believing certain doctrines—it was about complete devotion to Jesus.
One question burned into Studd’s heart:
“If Jesus Christ be God and died for me, then no sacrifice can be too great for me to make for Him.”
This thought became a spiritual awakening.
Studd realized that he had admired Christ but had never truly allowed Christ to rule his life.
Soon afterward, he experienced a deep personal commitment to Jesus Christ. The gospel became real, and he began asking a radical question:
“What does it truly mean to follow Christ?”
God’s answer soon became clear.
In 1885, Studd made a decision that shocked English society. Instead of pursuing fame in sports or living comfortably from his inheritance, he chose to obey God’s call to missionary service.
He gave away most of his personal wealth and joined the China Inland Mission, a missionary movement founded by Hudson Taylor.
Leaving behind fame, security, and privilege, Studd traveled to China to preach the gospel.
Later his missionary work extended to India and eventually to Democratic Republic of the Congo, where he founded the Worldwide Evangelization Crusade.
Many people questioned his decision. Some critics said he was wasting his life and abandoning a brilliant future.
But Studd famously replied with words that have inspired generations:
“Only one life, ’twill soon be past; only what’s done for Christ will last.”

C. T. Studd’s decision changed the direction of his entire life.
Instead of stadiums filled with cheering crowds, he spent decades serving Christ in remote mission fields. He endured hardship, illness, poverty, and long separation from his homeland.
Yet his faith deepened.
Studd’s life became a testimony that true success is not measured by fame or comfort but by obedience to Christ.
His missionary work helped inspire thousands of Christians to dedicate their lives to global evangelism. Many young believers left comfortable lives in Europe and America to serve Christ across the world because of Studd’s example.
Even today, his writings and testimony continue to encourage believers to live boldly for the kingdom of God.
