Germany in the early 1930s was gripped by fear, nationalism, and hope for restoration after economic collapse. Adolf Hitler’s rise promised unity and strength, and many churches welcomed him as a political savior. Christian symbols blended with Nazi ideology. Sermons avoided confrontation. Silence became the price of safety.
Bonhoeffer watched with grief as pastors redefined obedience, choosing national loyalty over biblical truth. He saw churches growing in numbers—but shrinking in courage.
Emotionally, he stood isolated—young, unheard, and deeply burdened. Humanly, resistance seemed futile. Speaking out meant losing friends, influence, freedom, and possibly life itself.

In 1934, guided by conscience and Scripture, he helped form the Confessing Church, openly rejecting Nazi control over Christian teaching. Though vastly outnumbered, they declared Christ—not the state—was Lord of the Church.
God did not remove the danger—but He gave clarity, courage, and peace. Bonhoeffer obeyed, trusting God with the consequences.

The cost was severe. Seminaries were closed. Bonhoeffer was banned from teaching. Friends distanced themselves. Eventually, he was arrested and imprisoned.
Yet inwardly, his faith deepened. Letters from prison reveal peace, clarity, and unwavering trust in Christ.
Before his execution in 1945 at Flossenbürg concentration camp, witnesses reported him praying calmly—entirely surrendered.
The circumstances grew darker.
