🎬🔛 Historical True Story: Saint Nino and the Conversion of Georgia (c. 326 AD)
In the early 4th century, Georgia (Iberia) was a land entrenched in pagan worship, with temples to Armazi and Zaden and devotion to many gods. Into this context came Saint Nino, a woman from Cappadocia, who boldly preached the Gospel of Christ and called the nation to renounce its many gods. Through her persistent witness and prayers, even Queen Nana turned from pagan shrines to follow Christ.

💒 🕊️ ✨ After centuries in Egypt, Israel was steeped in polytheism — surrounded by temples and many gods. When God rescued them from slavery, He didn’t just free their bodies — He revealed Himself as their one true God. At Mount Sinai, He spoke clearly: There is only one God, and nothing must take His place in their lives.
This command wasn’t arbitrary law-making; it was a covenant declaration from the God who had already shown His power and love by delivering them from bondage, grounding obedience in relationship rather than ritual alone.
🤔 🪞 💡 This first commandment doesn’t merely prohibit other gods; it reveals who God is and why He alone deserves all of our devotion. God is not a force or an idea — He is personal, good, and holy. He chose Israel not because they were perfect but because He was faithful to them first. When God says, “You shall have no other gods before Me,” He calls us to exclusive devotion — not adding Him to a life already filled with other loves but centering our entire life on Him.
Idolatry isn’t only literal worship of false deities; it’s anything that occupies the throne of our hearts — wealth, comfort, reputation, success, or even self-image. The Israelites, soon after receiving this command, built a golden calf when Moses delayed on the mountain — a tragic reminder that human hearts quickly revert to idols when God feels distant. Today, we face subtler idols: screens, approval, achievement. The command to have no other gods before Him calls us to daily surrender, to repeatedly choose God over every competing desire.
🎬🔚 End of the story:
The dramatic turning point came during a hunting expedition by King Mirian III. Surrounded by wilderness, he was suddenly enveloped in darkness. In panic, he called to the gods of his land — to no avail. Then, recalling the God of Nino, he cried out, “If indeed this God is there, let Him deliver me.” Immediately light returned, and the king abandoned his false gods to embrace the one true God. He declared Christianity the state religion, ordered the destruction of pagan temples, and built the first Christian church in Mtskheta — forever changing the identity of his people.
This historical moment illustrates the very heart of the first commandment. When confronted with the impotence of idols and the living power of the true God, an entire kingdom was transformed.

⚒️🎯 We realize that idolatry is not just ancient but alive today. We have a choice each morning: will we give our first moments to God, or will our hearts drift to other masters? “No other gods before Me” means making Jesus the center of our decisions, time, resources, and affections — not just an addition to our life but the life we live. We acknowledge that every pursuit that pushes God to the edges of our heart is a form of idolatry. The call to obedience is not burdensome but liberating — God’s commands protect us from the emptiness of false attachments and invite us into fullness of life with Him.
🙏 🕯️ Prayer: Lord God, You alone are worthy of all praise. Teach us to keep You first in all things — above our desires, ambitions, and comforts. Help us to see and turn from every idol of our heart, and to follow You faithfully each day. Amen.
