📖 ✝️ Scripture Reading – Exodus 17:1–7

🎬🔛 In 1901, missionary Amy Carmichael was rescuing young children from temple trafficking in South India. One night, a storm swept through Dohnavur, knocking out all sources of light in the mission home. With more than twenty frightened children crying in the darkness, Amy felt overwhelmed—resources were low, they had no spare lamps, and the storm made travel impossible.
She reached for the only thing they had: a small, worn-out lantern barely held together by thin wire. Its flame flickered, weak and unreliable. Still, Amy lifted it and prayed, “Lord, use even this.”

💒 🕊️ ✨ The wilderness was dry, the sun merciless, and once again Israel found no water. At Rephidim, the people turned on Moses with accusations and threats, forgetting the God who had parted the Red Sea only weeks earlier. Moses felt pressure from every side—fear from the crowd, exhaustion from leadership, and uncertainty about what to do next. But God’s instruction was surprisingly familiar: “Take in your hand the rod with which you struck the river.”
It was the same rod God had used at the Nile, at the Red Sea, and in previous miracles. God told Moses to stand before the elders, raise the rod, strike the rock, and trust that water would flow. God added one more detail—“I will stand before you there.” The same God who worked yesterday would show up again today. Moses lifted what he had used before, remembered God’s faithfulness, and obeyed. In an impossible place, water poured out.
🤔 🪞 💡 God often sends us forward by first taking us backward. When Moses picked up the rod, it wasn’t a reminder of Moses’ strength—it was a reminder of God’s track record. We forget that miracles are rarely about methods; they are about the God who stands with us. The familiar rod symbolized divine consistency: the God who acted once is willing to act again. Sometimes we feel stuck because we’re expecting new tools, new signs, or new resources, when God is pointing us toward what He has already placed in our hands. The past is not a prison—it is a testimony. And when God calls us to use something old, He is preparing to reveal something new. God’s presence at the rock also teaches that results are never produced by methods alone—means are simply vessels; God is the source. When Jesus was struck at the cross, living water flowed for our souls. In the same way, God takes what appears ordinary and draws supernatural life out of it.

As she stepped into the hallway, the lantern’s flame suddenly steadied—bright enough to light the entire corridor. Child after child calmed as Amy moved from room to room, the little lantern glowing far brighter and longer than it should have.
Later she learned that the wick was burned almost to nothing, and the lantern should have gone out within minutes. Instead, it burned for hours—long enough for every child to be comforted and safely settled. Amy wrote that God had taken “the tiniest thing we possessed” and turned it into “a beam of perfect calm.”
It became a lifelong reminder to her and the Dohnavur Fellowship that God does not need perfect tools—just surrendered ones.

⚒️🎯 We often face our own dry places—moments when fear rises, pressure crowds in, and nothing in front of us seems promising. Yet God invites us to remember how He has acted in our past and use what He has already placed in our hands: our faith experiences, answered prayers, testimonies, skills, relationships, and spiritual disciplines. When we bring these before God, not as instruments of our strength but as reminders of His faithfulness, our confidence shifts from insecurity to trust. We begin to see that the God who stood beside Moses stands with us, guiding us, supplying what we lack, and bringing water from the hardest places of our lives. We move forward not by demanding new signs, but by holding firmly to the ones He has already given.
🙏 🕯️ Prayer: Lord, remind us of Your faithfulness and teach us to trust what You have already placed in our hands. Stand before us in every dry place and let Your living water flow again. Strengthen our faith, renew our courage, and lead us forward by Your presence. Amen.
